America is turning 250, and there’s no better place to celebrate than right here in Mitchell County. Throughout the year, our communities are honoring this historic milestone with unique events, local history, and patriotic traditions that invite both residents and visitors to experience the heart of rural Kansas.
One of the most memorable ways to celebrate is by taking the Bells of Mitchell County Tour. Created by the Mitchell County Historical Society Museum, this self-guided adventure takes you to 15 historic and distinctive bells located throughout the county. Each bell tells a story about the people and places that helped shape Mitchell County. After visiting the bells, simply tell the museum which one was your favorite to receive a commemorative America 250 marble coaster.

As part of the nationwide celebration, something truly special will happen on July 4. At 6 p.m., all 15 bells on the tour will ring simultaneously across Mitchell County. Residents are encouraged to step outside and ring a bell of their own, creating a countywide tribute to America’s 250th birthday.

The celebration continues at Lakefest at Waconda Lake on July 4. Along with the annual festivities, food, and spectacular fireworks, visitors can participate in special America 250 activities. Test your knowledge with USA trivia, enter a patriotic art raffle, and leave your mark on history by contributing to a community time capsule that will remain sealed until America’s 300th birthday in 2076.
Later this year, history lovers can explore the Kansas Humanities traveling exhibit, Declaration 1776, at the Mitchell County Historical Society Museum from November 14 through December 31. Through original documents and engaging displays, the exhibit examines how the Declaration of Independence has inspired generations in their pursuit of freedom, equality, and self-determination.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, looking for a family-friendly Fourth of July celebration, or simply wanting to learn more about the place we call home, Mitchell County offers meaningful ways to celebrate this once-in-a-generation anniversary.
